DS 401: Data Science Capstone

Students work as individuals and teams to complete the planning, design, and implementation of a significant multi-disciplinary project in data science. Oral and written reports. Below are student examples of past projects.

"This past semester my team and I had the opportunity to perform research with Iowa State's Department of Residence. The goal of this project was to identify significant factors that determined retention rates of freshman and sophomore students. Using classification, regression, and various other machine learning techniques, we identified groups of students that had lower retention rates than their peers. We also had the opportunity to present results and recommendations to resident leaders to improve the overall Iowa State experience. This project provided a real-world problem that could be solved using techniques I learned and gave me an opportunity to practice some of the projects that I will be doing later in my career."
