Ryan Riesbesehl (’25 data science, computer science) has combined coursework in data science, computer science, and statistics with hands-on learning. His internship as a full stack engineer with a video game group helped him learn to solve real-time problems.
Why did you decide to study data science at Iowa State University?

How is your data science major preparing you for a career?
“The projects I have worked on, such as an F-1 data analysis, use real-life datasets and industry-relevant tools that allow for collaborative problem-solving, closely mirroring professional expectations. Experiences like these have given me a strong foundation in analytical thinking and technical execution.”
Can you share about your internships?
“One of my internships was working for a video game group as a full-stack engineer, where I developed and maintained game logic by optimizing systems using coding languages like Java, JavaScript, and Python to fix real-time problems. I also performed extensive work on the database systems they used, consistently utilizing SQL commands to group and delete data records.”
What should future Cyclones know about the strengths of the data science program?
“The data science degree provides strong technical skills in statistics, programming, and math while preparing you to solve practical problems across industries. It offers flexibility and high demand in the job market.”
